It’s Pancake Day!! I remember the first time I heard this. “What? You have a special day to celebrate pancakes?” After 9/11 in September 2001, I had moved to London permanently in October to start my MBA programme and finally live under the same roof as my fiancé. It had been a long winter, with really cold nights and very dark days. Our windows had been painted shut by th...

Do you have a “leave the house song” that you sing before you walk out the door? Leaving the house each day is never easy when you have so much on your mind, yet you have to try and remember the mundane things that cannot be forgotten. Phone. Keys. Wallet. Bus Pass (Oyster card for the tube!) This is the song we sing, these four items that form the bare minimums for every journey beyon...

Yesterday, I had to go to central London. The last time I was there was in December, just before they decided that Lockdown 3 (Tier 4) would be necessary again. Tier 4 meant they shut all non-essential stores, and you are only allowed outside for exercise, food shopping or medical appointments. That last time I had gone to town was for an eye appointment. When they called me to say my glasses were...

Virtual Tours have become one of the options for tour guides to continue their craft and make some money during the pandemic. Initially, I was not a keen fan of doing a virtual tour. I have always been in the camp of “that’s weird”, and didn’t really feel the need to try and change my eating habits just because it’s a new month. I also never subscribed to the “Dry January” campaign either, but that is because ...

My husband and I were married in the month of December, and for the last six years, we have celebrated our anniversary by going to a Christmas Market in Europe. Christmas Markets are these magical places where you can eat, drink and be merry! Being from Texas, we didn’t really know anything about Christmas Markets. We had always been fans of the Texas Renaissance Festival or Crawfish Festiva...

Since we are in Lockdown, and since March when the pandemic hit and the world stopped travelling, I have not been able to give tours. Lockdown has given me time on my hands, which I have tried to fill in many ways. In the beginning, I used the time to clean the house. That lead to decluttering the house. I have also been cooking, trying new foods, and of course doing lots of research that I can us...

During the second London lockdown, I reduced my cycling trips into town in comparison to the first lockdown. The weather had alot to do with this, as it is pretty hard to motivate yourself to get out on a bike in nine degree weather and 40% chance of rain. My bike tires are skinny, so rain makes me slip everywhere. However, my friend and fellow tour guide Rob provided me with the perfect motivatio...
